The creation of this ash wood chair began with careful planning; sketching out the proportions, creating a design that would fit my personal dimensions and height. Ash wood was chosen for its esthetic drawing, but also for its strength, flexibility, AND workability! Because of me using my hands and chisels to carve out the joinery.
Two slabs were selected from a beautiful ash tree growing in a village near Nijmegen, NL. Using local wood not only adds a unique story to the piece but also highlights the natural variations in pattern and color!!
Inspired in part by Rietveld’s approach—emphasizing simplicity, clarity of form - and visible construction! No screws! Wood joinery techniques were applied only. I carved the joint connecting the armrest to the chair leg by hand - I still get nervous when I think of it!
